Choose your pace.
Choose the activity that both of you can enjoy for its full duration. Leave breathing room around it.
Compare the details
| Compare | Food tour | Cooking class |
|---|---|---|
| What you do | Walk between food stops and taste dishes selected by the operator. | Follow an instructor, prepare dishes, and eat what the class makes. |
| Your energy | Check the walking distance, standing time, stairs, and weather plan. | Ask how much time you will spend standing and whether seating is available. |
| What you take away | A route through a neighborhood and introductions to different foods. | Practice with cooking techniques; check whether recipes are included. |
| Time to allow | Include travel to the meeting point and the route's finishing location. | Include travel to the studio and time to find its entrance. |
| Food preferences | Read the actual tasting menu and ask about substitutions at each stop. | Read the class menu and ask which ingredients can be changed. |
When you want different things
If one wants discovery and the other wants depth, choose one main activity and add a short second moment. Pair a cooking class with an independent neighborhood walk, or a food tour with a later visit to a kitchenware shop. Each person should name one must-have and one thing they can let go.
Examples
For scale, Arigato Travel's Best of Shibuya evening tour lists three hours and five food stops. Cooking Sun lists three-hour Tokyo classes, including sushi making. These are examples of the formats, not a ranking or a promise that every tour or class works the same way.
Before you book
Confirm the menu, meeting point, walking or standing demands, language, cancellation terms, and what is included. Arigato explicitly says it cannot guarantee allergy-free or dietary-specific meals. Ingredient substitutions offered by a cooking school also should not be treated as an allergy guarantee. Discuss your requirements directly before booking.
