When you want different things
If one wants flexibility and the other enjoys company, decide which need is hardest to compromise on. A necessary pace adjustment can justify asking about a private format. If both already like the route, a shared departure may work well. Agree on one priority each before comparing operators.
Examples
Japan Guide Agency describes private Tokyo tours built with your guide and notes that transportation time counts toward the tour. Arigato Travel lets guests make a standard food tour private and can discuss tailoring it. Its FAQ says changes still need advance notice and cannot always be accommodated.
Before you book
Private does not automatically mean a private car, an empty restaurant, unlimited changes, or step-free access. Confirm the experience boundary, group size, language, meeting arrangements, cancellation rules, and specific access needs. Ask whether the guide can realistically fit both priorities into the time available.
